A portion of Milstead Avenue will serve as a memorial to honor the late Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with an unveiling planned for January 2021.

The Conyers City Council approved a resolution for the memorial to honor King at its Dec. 16 meeting.  The portion of Milstead designated to pay tribute to the civil rights leader will be called Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Avenue.

Councilwoman Connie Alsobrook, who initiated and pushed for the resolution, said six MLK signs will be placed along Milstead Avenue beginning at Georgia Highway 20 NE heading southwest until Milstead intersects with Main Street.

“I’m pleased with the resolution that was passed to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I pushed for a street to honor Dr. King because he represents peace, and that is something we all can use right now,” said Alsobrook. “My hometown is Memphis, TN, where Dr. King was assassinated. I named both of  my daughters using his initials because of his importance to the world in pushing for peace. One of my daughters has the initials MLK, the other has two of his initials, ML and they both know what their initials stand for.”

Alsobrook said residents and businesses along Milstead Avenue won’t have to change their mailing addresses.

“Since this is a memorial, the street’s name will remain the same. There will be three signs placed on each side of the road where the section will be a memorial to Dr. King,” Alsobrook said.

Alsobrook said the signs will be unveiled on King’s birthday, Jan. 15, 2021.
