For those of you who think girl bands may be a thing of the past, think twice when listening to Atlanta based group ‘The CoEdz’. With frequent group change-ups one can’t help but compare them to another multi-platinum girl group who took their roster from four to three amid large success. Their sound could not be further from Destiny’s Child soulful ballads and sassy power woman anthems, instead ‘The Coedz’ sound and look like Fergie’s kid sisters but with three times the energy and spunk.
The smooth harmonies and no-nonsense persona the girls take on in their videos and songs keep their appeal sexy and the playfully risque outfits from looking too much like a millennium revamp of ‘The Spice Girls’. The girls own their sex appeal in a brazen way unseen from girl groups of the past, but rather in the vein of solo artists like Lady Gaga and Rhianna. Some might think three female artists brazenly owning their sexuality overkill, but I find it refreshing.
It is difficult to be in an all-girl pop group and not invite comparisons to the ones who came before, but ‘The CoEdz’ are in a dance electronica class all their own. With the girls (band members Kenzie, Loren and newcomer Ashley) busy on branding themselves and working on a new album there hasn’t been much new music in 2012. Check out their new music video for their single “Runway”- I assure you that what see and hear is pure, unadulterated dance heaven. It is definitely the type of music you will blast at an all-girl pregame while you put on your knee socks, drink cosmopolitans and straighten your hair.
